As you wander the shaded paths of Woodland Park Zoo (5500 Phinney Ave N), you can view more than 1,000 animals from around the world. By the south entrance, the free 2.5-acre Woodland Park Rose Garden showcases more than 3,000 plants. The Olmsted Brothers architectural firm designed walkable Woodland Park (1000 N 50th St). From the north end, follow the 2.8-mile jogging and biking trail around Green Lake Park (7201 E Green Lake Dr N), with its sandy beach, boat rentals, and playing fields. The Seattle Public Theater (7312 W Green Lake Dr N) presents plays in a handsomely converted bathhouse.

Eat and Drink

You’ll find excellent restaurants near the northeast shore of Green Lake, including Tapas Lab (7012 Woodlawn Ave NE), with Asian and Mediterranean small plates. Nearby Frelard Tamales (6412 Latona Ave NE) sources regionally to create flavorful handmade salsa roja pork and corn-mushroom-cheese tamales. Kisaku Sushi (2101 N 55th St) serves exceptional Japanese fare, and Red Mill (312 N 67th St) is a favorite for juicy burgers and luscious milkshakes. In Phinney Ridge, make your way up Greenwood Avenue’s restaurant row for German beer and brats at Prost! (7311 Greenwood Ave N), imaginative Filipino comfort fare at The Chicken Supply (7410 Greenwood Ave N), and creative cocktails and Cambodian street food at Oliver’s Twist (6822 Greenwood Ave N).

Shop

The Phinery (7601 Greenwood Ave N) stocks well-curated housewares and gifts, and Labels (7220 Greenwood Ave N) carries high-quality second-hand women’s fashion. Green Lake’s J Matheson Urban Gifts & Kitchen (424 NE 71st St) is a favorite for smartly designed gadgets and home goods, while Gregg’s Greenlake Cycle (7007 Woodlawn Ave NE) sells bikes of all styles as well as gear and apparel. Pick up sweet treats at Chocolati (7810 E Green Lake Dr N) and Bell’s Cookie Co (6900 E Green Lake Way N).
