The team of LMN + GGN + SHoP is the apparent successful submitter in the competition to provide design services for the planned Washington State Convention Center (WSCC) facility expansion project, subject to completion of contract negotiations. The existing WSCC is located at 800 Convention Place in downtown Seattle.
Seattle-based LMN will lead the team as the prime architect. Seattle-based GGN (Gustafson Guthrie Nichol) will be responsible for urban design and landscape, and New York City-based SHoP will be a resource for co-development planning.
Since opening in 1988, the WSCC has been a meetings industry leader in service quality, innovation and revenue generation. The existing multi-level facility hosts more than 40 national conventions annually in addition to a variety of regional and local events on any given day. Demand continues to grow for high-quality exhibitions and meeting space, especially for associations in the medical, scientific and technical fields. The center’s 205,700 square feet of heavy-load exhibition space no longer meets the needs of an increasing number of conventions, tradeshows, and local and regional corporate clients.
The addition project is intended to more than double the size of the existing facility. Features of the new facility, which is proposed to be constructed to the northeast of the existing facility, are approximately 300,000 square feet of heavy-load exhibit space, approximately 135,000 square feet of meeting/break-out space, and an additional ballroom. Construction is planned to begin in early 2017 and be completed in 2020.
Located in the heart of Seattle and walking distance to world-class hotels, restaurants, entertainment and attractions, the Washington State Convention Center has been the Northwest’s premier meetings and events facility for 26 years. WSCC welcomes thousands of visitors from around the globe each year, offering industry-leading service, award-winning catering and a comprehensive range of services for event planners, exhibitors and guests. With a longstanding commitment to sustainability, public art and modern technology, WSCC serves its surrounding community and provides visitors with a truly unique Northwest experience.
