Diving into a new city’s art scene might not come first to mind when traveling with kids, but Seattle makes it easy. Start at the Seattle Art Museum* (1300 First Ave) downtown, where kids can embark on a storybook adventure through the galleries and pair children’s books with works of art (ages 2–5) or follow a sketching tour inspired by the masterpieces on display (ages 3–6 or 6–10). Even in the cooler months, SAM’s waterfront Olympic Sculpture Park* (2901 Western Ave) provides a frolic-friendly space for appreciating art. To see more public art, hop on the Link light rail between downtown and Mount Baker stations for a mobile viewing of the SODO Track murals. On Saturdays, the Seattle Asian Art Museum* (1400 E Prospect St) on Capitol Hill hosts free drop-in art making, performances, and story time in the galleries. At the Frye Art Museum* (704 Terry Ave), also on Capitol Hill, join Small Frye: Storytelling + Art on first Fridays for an interactive story time in the museum gallery, followed by sculpting, drawing, collage, or painting inspired by the book’s theme or current exhibitions. And back downtown, MoPOP* (325 Fifth Ave N) has opened its doors to two kid-friendly exhibits: Heroes & Villians: The Art of the Disney Costume and Indie Game Revolution.
